Last Saturday April 13th, nearly a thousand volunteers in Las Cruces came together to participate in the Great American Cleanup™ . The event is sponsored by Keep Las Cruces Beautiful in partnership with Keep America Beautiful, New Mexico Clean & Beautiful, and national, state and local sponsors.
Southwest Hazard Control participated for the second year in a row in partnership with Alameda Elementary. In fact, here’s Alameda Principal Bobbie Grace getting ready to start.
“Southwest Hazard Control works with the schools to make sure that children have a safe and healthy environment in which to learn. We also wants kids to be proud of where they go to school”, explains Las Cruces Division Manager Michael Armendariz. “Events like this give us the opportunity to make that happen.” And here’s Mike being the hands on guy that we all know him to be.
What makes this so special is that we are working weekends at another school right now and our guys are putting in 40 hours over the course of two and a half days. They had worked the night before and only had a few hours rest. Even though they were facing another full day and night of work, they showed up at Alameda Elementary with positive attitudes, ready to help out. And here they are, these are the guys that make our whole operation tick, so a big thanks to them too.
So we gave the guys a wish list of what needed to be done, not thinking that it would happen in the short time we had to spend there. In less than an hour, our crew had sanded and re-varnished fifteen benches, cleaned all the sidewalks and courts, picked up four bags of trash and power washed the exterior of the school. It was an amazing experience, seeing so many employees working together to help out a school in our community.
Some future SHC team members ?
And of course, this makes the kids happy too !
So all in all, a great day was had by everyone and from all of us here at SHC, thank you to everyone who took part and hope you had as much fun as we did.
NOTE: If you are in the Las Cruces area, please join up on Saturday, April 27 from 8am to 12 pm at Dona Ana Elementary School’s Comcast Cares Day.
