Southwest HAZARD CONTROL, Inc. (SHC) is a certified, woman owned small business that is a financially sound, growth-oriented environmental remediation company. SHC was founded in 1982 by Gerald J. Karches and Chrisann Karches. Mr. Karches retired in 1999 and the company is now solely managed by Chrisann Karches making SHC a woman owned enterprise. It is the oldest, continuously operating asbestos abatement company in Arizona. SHC established itself as a hazardous materials remediation company 27 years ago in 1985 and began lead abatement services in 1991. SHC’s management and technical staff are certified to OSHA 1910.120, HAZWOPER, blood borne pathogens for biological cleanups, and Mine Safety & Health Administration (MSHA). Our team is confined space trained with rescue capabilities. Along with hazmat endorsed CDL drivers the staff is certified to 49 CFR, HM 181 requirements for the handling and packaging of hazardous materials in transportation. SHC is also certified to the International Code Council and the Arizona Department of Environmental Quality to decommission and close Underground Storage Tanks.

SHC furnishes all labor, materials, employee training, pollution & general liability insurance, errors and omissions insurance, expertise, and equipment necessary to carry out the specified hazardous waste remediation, site investigation, waste characterization, and emergency response incident. SHC can secure all required permits including any necessary state, regional and local licenses at the request of our client.

Hazardous Material Packaging and Disposal
SHC will package hazardous materials in accordance with 49 CFR 172-173. SHC will determine that the packaging or container complies with and has been manufactured, assembled, and marked in accordance with 49 CFR 173 and 178.

Characterization of potentially contaminated sites is managed through an integrated system of sampling procedures as outlined in EPA sample guidance document SW846. Transportation of Hazardous Waste
SHC is a licensed Hazardous Waste Transporter and transfer facility under the State of Arizona identification number of AZD000507152 and submits a waste transport activities report to the State monthly. Staff drivers maintain Commercial Drivers Licenses with Hazmat endorsements for placarded waste transport. SHC does not transport explosives, radiological, or biological materials.
